5kg recycled bag of 'House' Clay. TR5 is the main clay we work with in the Clay Hands studio. It is a stoneware clay that fires a rich buff colour and has a beautiful manganese speckle which we love because it gives a bit of depth and extra interest to glazes.
The recycled clay goes through a meticulous process, starting with slaking in water to allow the clay particles to mature and refine. Afterward, it’s dried on a plaster bat and passed through a de-airing pugmill. The result is high-quality clay that often performs better due to its enhanced plasticity—the more mature the clay, the better it holds its form.
Our recycled clay is particularly well-suited for wheel throwing because it varies in consistency. This allows you to choose a bag that best fits your project—stiffer clay is ideal for taller vases, while softer clay is perfect for wider, flatter pieces.
Recycled TR5 House Clay
Students are responsible for recycling their own clay if they wish to reuse it. Simply spray your leftover clay with water, store it in your recycling tub for a week, and then wedge it the following week for reuse.
If you'd prefer not to reuse your leftover clay, you can donate it to our studio’s recycling system. We have a large-scale process in place for recycling TR5 clay in bulk and are happy to assist with this.
Remember to write your name on your bag of clay with a permanent marker and place it back on your private shelf at the end of class. It is up to students to keep track of clay.
