We're honoured to welcome Nada Spencer to Clay Hands for an afternoon dedicated entirely to surface decoration. Nada has spent many years teaching ceramics, and in that time she's built up the kind of knowledge that only comes from decades of hands-in-the-clay experimentation, the technical know-how, the instinct for what a surface is asking for, and a generosity for sharing it all with a room full of curious potters. Surface decoration is often the part of pottery that gets the least attention, almost as an afterthought. But it's where a piece really finds its voice. The same bowl can feel completely different depending on how it's dressed... a wash of slip here, a resist pattern there, a confident stroke of underglaze that catches the eye before anything else does. This workshop puts that whole world front and centre. Over two and a half hours, Nada will guide you through a variety of techniques for building visual depth and texture using slip and underglaze. Expect to explore layering colour for richness, mark-making and mono-printing-style transfers, resist techniques for crisp pattern work, and the kind of considered, playful mess that leads to genuinely dynamic designs. You'll leave with new tools for your decorating toolkit and, hopefully, an inspired sense of what's possible on a clay surface. Whether you're a beginner keen to move beyond plain glazes or a more experienced potter looking to refine your surface work, this workshop is designed to meet you where you are: hands-on, and full of the kind of detail you don't always get time for in a regular class.
