Embracing the Clay Experience: A Journey Together

Updated: Oct 6

The Joy of Pottery Without Distractions

One of the things we have loved noticing in our classes over the years is how rarely phones make an appearance in the studio.

It’s not that we don’t appreciate these little glowing rectangles in our pockets. We do (mostly). But once your hands are covered in clay, swiping and scrolling quickly loses its appeal. Clay always wins that battle. Smudged screens, sticky fingerprints, and little trails of slip sneaking into crevices mean that inevitably, phones end up wearing as much clay as we do. I once couldn’t hear anyone on phone calls because there was so much clay in my phone microphone (a problem remedied by using a hairdryer).

We have a few signs up asking people to take calls outside, but truthfully, they are hardly ever needed. The clay does the work for us.

A Welcome Break from Technology

What feels strange is how unusual this has become. To look around a room and not see faces lit up by blue light feels almost old-fashioned. To be offline for three whole hours is suddenly a rare thing.

When phones do come out, it is brief. A quick glance at an inspiration image, a snapshot of progress, or a short video to capture the rhythm of hands at work. Then they are put away again.

The rest of the time, something else takes shape. We remember how to speak to each other without distraction. We return to slowness, to the physical world, to the guidance of our own hands. We get to practice being present. Sometimes even being awkward. And in that awkwardness, there is honesty, a kind of humanness that is hard to find behind a screen.

The Transformative Power of Clay

In our pottery classes, we create a space where we can explore our creativity. Clay offers a unique opportunity to connect with ourselves and others. It’s a medium that encourages experimentation and play. Each piece we create tells a story, reflecting our journey and growth.

As we mold the clay, we also mold our thoughts and feelings. The process is therapeutic. It allows us to unwind and let go of the stresses of daily life. We often find ourselves lost in the moment, fully immersed in the tactile experience of shaping and forming.

This is where the magic happens. We discover new techniques, share tips, and inspire one another. It’s a collaborative environment that fosters creativity and connection.

Building a Community Through Pottery

At Clay Hands, we strive to be the go-to place in Cape Town for anyone who loves or wants to learn about clay. We aim to create a welcoming and supportive community. Here, people can explore their creativity and connect with others through pottery.

We host regular workshops and events, bringing together beginners and advanced pottery enthusiasts alike. These gatherings are not just about making pottery; they are about building relationships. We share laughter, stories, and sometimes even a few mishaps along the way.

Our community is diverse, filled with individuals from all walks of life. Each person brings their unique perspective and creativity to the table. It’s this diversity that enriches our classes and makes every session special.

The Joy of Creating Together

As we leave the studio muddy and happy, we carry with us more than just our creations. We take with us a sense of belonging and connection. Grounded not only by the clay itself but by the rare chance to be here... Fully, simply, together.

So, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced pottery enthusiast, we invite you to join us. Let’s embrace the joy of creating together. Let’s put our phones away and dive into the world of clay. Together, we can explore, learn, and grow in this beautiful journey of pottery.
