Master the art of creating impressive large-scale ceramic pieces in this intensive 2-day workshop. Led by our expert instructors Umi and Clay Hands founder Tash, you'll learn two powerful techniques for throwing big—multi-part form joining and coil throwing—without relying on muscle power. Using premium Fenix Special clay and flame thrower techniques, you'll discover shortcuts for centering large amounts of clay and building pieces up to 50cm tall. Perfect for intermediate to advanced throwers looking to expand their scale and technical repertoire. All materials, tools, and refreshments included, with optional firing services available to complete your masterpieces. Limited to 8 participants to ensure personalized instruction. Workshop Curriculum Day 1: Multi-Part Form Joining Learn stress-free techniques for centering substantial amounts of clay (3-4kg) using leverage, water assistance, and specialized tools rather than physical strength. Practice throwing uniform sections designed for joining, then learn how to seamlessly connect these components to create tall, impressive vessels. The day concludes with flame thrower techniques that strengthen joins and expedite drying between stages. Day 2: Coil Throwing Technique Learn to prepare and pre-compress coils, build a stable base, and progressively add and throw additional layers. Our instructors will demonstrate how to maintain even walls and consistent form while working with multiple coil additions. You'll also learn firing considerations for larger pieces and tips for successful drying and glazing. What's Included: 16kg of Fenix Special clay, tools, wheels, slab roller, aprons, tea/coffee, light refreshments and a delicious lunch in the courtyard each day. Optional Add-ons: • Bisque and glaze firing (up to 50cm): R350 • Additional Fenix Special clay: R107/5kg Minimum Requirements Participants should have experience with: • Centering1kg of clay or more • Throwing basic cylinders and bowls with even walls • Completing at least 20-30 thrown pieces previously • Understanding basic pottery terminology and tool usage • Some experience trimming and finishing wheel-thrown pieces Ideally participants can already center and throw consistently but want to overcome the challenges of working with larger forms.
