Ready, set, RAKU! Dive into the alchemy of alternative firing with 3 different raku techniques offered 04 November | At Earth Play Studio in Hout Bay | Open to all experience levels | Includes lunch What is Raku firing? In raku we use gas to rapidly fire bisqued pots up to 1000°c and then pull them out glowing hot from the fire, achieving interesting results by interacting with them in post firing processes. With this alternative Japanese inspired firing technique we really push the boundaries of what's possible in order to get magnificently interesting finishes on our pots, not possible in our usual oxidised firing process. In this very special workshop offered by mother/daughter duo Lissa and Tash, we offer participants the opportunity to get involved in the action: helping throw sawdust on pots in the post firing process or giving a hand at unloading the glowing hot pots from the kiln with tongs. Everyone, even those not actively involved in the action will be participating in some way - we start the day with glazing our pots together and end with scrubbing them down or waxing them up to make them glow. So be ready to get smokey with earth, fire, alchemy, working with your hands, raw materials and the chance traces of flames. We will be exploring horse hair and feather raku, obvara and 'traditional' raku techniques as well as some alternative smoke firing techniques: 1• ’Traditional’/ conventional raku, here we will use both a simple white glaze for a crackle effect or if you want lustrous bronze and green colours that will also be available. 2• Obvara, an Eastern European technique using beer that gives a matt toasty black mottled effect. 3• Imprinting carbonised feather, horse hair or sugar 4• Smoke-fired pots achieved with a paper firing giving a beautiful smoked look or pitch black Investment: R1250pp. Includes a light lunch and tea/coffee. This is a festive atmosphere so bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy fireside. You'll leave feeling well smoked, socialised and excited about the pots you get to take home with you (about 4 grapefruit size pots each). We will send a requirements list for what to make for each technique once you've booked your spot. Additionally, there will be bisqueware made by Liss and Tash available for purchase on the day too.

Cancellation Policy

Enrollment in workshops, classes and courses is limited. Early booking is encouraged, as many workshops fill quickly. A waiting list is established if a workshop is filled. • If notice of cancellation is received more than 5 days before the workshop/class/course the fee will be refunded, less 10% cancellation fee. • Refunds will not be issued for cancellations received less than 4 business days before the program begins unless that space can be filled. NO REFUND is issued in the event you cancel or do not show up on the start date. • In the event of emergency/illness, you can send an alternative person in your place. Please email us the name and email address of that person. Alternatively, if notice is given and there is a person on a waiting list that can fill your space a full refund will be given. • Classes, courses and series requires a weekly commitment for a number of consecutive weeks. Catch-ups, unless exceptional circumstance, cannot be accommodated for foundation courses as too much will be missed out. Please check dates carefully. • Clay Hands reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a workshop/class/course due to low enrolment or other unforeseen circumstances. If this should be necessary, Natasha will contact participants by email or phone at least 4 business days in advance of the date of the workshop, followed by a full refund.
