Refine your skills and deepen your connection with porcelain in this two-day hands-on workshop led by renowned artist Antoinette Badenhorst. Designed for experienced potters, this program explores the elegance, challenges, and possibilities of working with this delicate medium. Day 1: Exploring Porcelain Morning Session Antoinette begins with an insightful discussion of porcelain’s unique characteristics, sharing her personal journey and practical tips. Participants will pinch clay bowls as she demonstrates pinching, slab throwing, template cutting, and creating V-bowls, with an emphasis on porcelain’s technical nuances. Key Techniques: Pinching bowls, slab throwing, and cutting templates. Tips: Protect rims, use absorbing surfaces, and keep work covered to manage drying. Afternoon Session Put theory into practice by creating a pinch bowl and one additional piece (wheel-thrown or hand-built). Preserve at least one piece to alter and finish on Day 2 while mastering porcelain’s drying process. Objective: Build a personal connection with the "Diva" of clays and manage its quirks effectively. Day 2: Refinement and Freedom Morning Session Refine and alter your pieces with trimming and carving techniques. Antoinette will demonstrate how to overcome challenges, use appropriate tools, and control moisture for optimal results. Key Techniques: Trimming, smoothing, and altering bowls. Afternoon Session Complete your pieces, prepare them for glazing and firing, and learn tips for transporting unfired porcelain. Antoinette will wrap up with a mock demonstration on glazing and firing techniques.
