This special afternoon workshop invites participants to explore how animal and mythological forms can be shaped, supported, and held in clay. Working at a small sculptural scale, Lissa Claassens will demonstrate practical hand building techniques that allow expressive forms to remain hollow, balanced, and structurally sound. The session will cover the broomstick method for making hollow tubes to work with, as well as the use of darts and simple templates to help build volume, posture, and movement. These techniques are particularly useful when working with forms that suggest bodies, creatures, and presence. Lissa will also show shortcuts and easy ways to add details and texture. The focus of the workshop is on understanding structure as a way of caring for wildness. How a form stands. Where it carries weight. How movement can be suggested without collapse. Participants are encouraged to work loosely within the brief, allowing their sculptures to blur between animal, mythical, and imagined forms. The workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike. Clear demonstrations and individual guidance will support those new to sculpture, while offering depth and refinement for more advanced students. By the end of the session, each participant will have completed a small hollow sculpture ready for drying, glazing, and firing. All materials are included, and finished pieces will be glazed and fired by the studio, ready for collection approximately six weeks after the workshop. Tea, coffee, and light refreshments will be served, creating a relaxed and welcoming space to slow down, make, and connect. Date: Saturday 21 February Time: 2 to 5pm Cost: R550 for Clay Hands / Earth Play students R750 for the public Spaces are limited.
